Update by Paul Beckwith, March, 2015.
From Scientific America:
In this video, taken 150 miles from the nearest land, oceanographer James Thomson of the University of Washington explains how researchers are tracking these ocean rollers. He says scientists are “using buoys to measure the waves and the ice, and understand how waves are approaching the ice and breaking up the sea ice.” Other scientists show how robotic drones, called Seagliders, swoop under the ice to track the movement of the pack and how it changes as ocean conditions change. Read more about the expedition, and the search for house-sized waves of destruction, here.

Impact Files will be updated with articles and videos but the podcast is going to be intermittent for awhile or it will be changing in other ways. The site host for this site has to change soon and your Impact Files host can’t afford to keep the one we have, so this site may appear to vanish for awhile, or even forever. This may just be your perception of reality, or it may actually be happening. It’s possible that Paypal donations to help with operating costs may alter this perceived reality, but that is unknown at this time.
It’s astonishing, but climate change deniers are still a problem. Now that we are entering the 2016 US presidential season, the climate change denier claims will be amplified, as the politicians need to keep their corporate masters happy or the money doesn’t roll in.
We are probably now entering level 5 of climate change, on a scale from 1 to 10, where 10 means it’s over and we’re dead. We still have time to act, but less and less time every day. I was watching VICE the other night on HBO and they report the Antarctic is melting, sea ice is at its all-time low, it’s too late to stop it, and we need to to move everyone away from the coasts soon, like now. Scientists are afraid. The rest of us should be, too.
The climate change deniers say, it’s not happening. And if it is happening, not to worry. We’ll all adapt. That’s like saying nevermind about your husband’s Alzheimers – your husband will adapt! Yeah, he will … and then he’ll die. Because Alzheimers, like runaway climate change, is fatal. Climate change is already fatal, because it’s killing hundreds of thousands of people every year right now.
There are many alarming facts in this radio show from MPR’s Climate Cast. It’s a look at the psychology of climate change denial. One of the most alarming claims in this podcast is this crazy theory: Supposedly, men have a problem accepting climate change as fact, because they want to avoid appearing feminine. The theory, put forth by a woman on this podcast, claims that men have a hard time getting alarmed by climate change because climate change “alarmists” are seen as “whiny” and being “whiny” is a “negative feminine attribute”.
Excuse me, but are you focking kidding me? I see government men on TV every day trembling in their shoes and shaking like a leaf about some non-existant terrorism threat to the US, but the people warning us about climate change are whiny?
Aside from that insanity, (if it’s even slightly true it makes me so, so sad to be part of the human race) this is a good recent climate podcast from Minnesota Public Radio, where they whine about climate change on a regular basis, and they’re not even all women.
I’m so sick of the excuses and BS surrounding the enormous problem that’s headed our way like a derailed train. If we don’t get off our asses pronto the whole whiny human race is dead and done with. Including all the goddam men, the loyal dogs, the cute cats, the farm animals, the beautiful wildlife, the bees, the birds and the butterflies. It will all be gone, unless the human race acts decisively. It’s that simple.
It does not seem right to me that one species on this planet gets to kill off everything into extinction, just because they have some kind of political loyalties, or some fear of appearing feminine.
Business as usual, that is the real risk. There are people working on pressing environmental and climate issues, but not nearly enough of them. Working hard for business as usual so that nothing is done about climate change, are people who we call the merchants of doubt. They are being very effective. More and more CO2 is entering the atmosphere, more than ever, and though some things are improving, not nearly enough is being done.
Some people, some corporations, some oil companies, are going to a lot of effort to make you think there is nothing to worry about. They twist the facts to plant doubt in people’s minds about this issue, because a lot of millionaires stand to lose a lot of money if we stop using fossil fuels,.
They tell politicians to reassure the public that climate change is caused by sunspots or “cycles” and they give them donations to do it. Politicians are either too ignorant or greedy to argue. Read part of this and this.
Paraphrased from the Daily Beast:
Wei-Hock (“Willie”) Soon doesn’t appear in the new documentary Merchants of Doubt, but he might as well be its poster child. That’s because director Robert Kenner’s film, . . . . is about how the tobacco, fossil-fuel and other industries hire so-called “scientific experts” to refute charges that their products are dangerous. Wei Hock Soon, a scientist who claims that variations in the sun’s energy, not greenhouse gases, can explain climate change, was recently exposed as receiving over $1.2 million from fossil-fuel companies, purportedly to fund his research. He … failed to disclose this conflict of interest to the journals that published his papers—and is the latest in a long line of scientists and spokespersons paid to cast doubt on real independent scientific research.
Some of these doubters are “ideologically committed, some are just in it for the money, some in it for the attention,” says Naomi Oreskes, co-author of the book on which the film is based.
Even our progressive president Obama is not doing nearly enough because he promotes an all of the above energy strategy and has opened up new areas of fossil fuel exploration. Our Democrats in the Congress are not doing enough either, and they are compromised. Many of them own stocks in fossil fuels companies!
I have seen this sickness in Democratic members of Congress a lot in the last 10 years. Supposedly liberal Nancy Pelosi has investments in fossil fuels. In 2007 the Wall Street Journal reported that Nancy Pelosi invested at least $100,000 in the Greenwasher T. Boone Pickens’s natural gas distribution company, Clean Energy Fuels, and she didn’t seem to realize at the time that natural gas was a fossil fuel. At the time, both her and Harry Reid were enthusiastically promoting natural gas as a great fuel, as was the Center for American Progress, and then later, as was President Obama. Any fossil fuel you burn adds CO2 to the atmosphere and therefore adds to climate change. But many of our Democratic leaders are ignorant of that fact.
There is no factual debate about climate change and what is causing it. There is a debate based on nothing but capitalism about whether it’s something we should be spending money on. Some people fear changing our economic system, even though if we wait long enough, the system will be changed FOR US by the increasing effects of climate change.
2014 was the hottest year on record. 2015 is already on track to beat that record. An El Nino is coming. As the earth heats up, people will suffer, animals will migrate or die, crops will burn, droughts will increase in some places, rains will flood other places, and politicians will argue about how many pipelines they need to give to their friends in the oil industry so they can increase this growing catastrophe
Earth at Risk
Last November, some of the world’s preeminent strategists in environmental defense, social justice, revolutionary fire, and grassroots activism came together to share their insights and speak toward one goal: forming game-changing responses to address the converging crises we face. These strategists included people like Alice Walker – Vandana Shiva – Chris Hedges, Derrick Jensen – Guy McPherson – Thomas Linzey and many more. Topics covered at this conference included Species extinction, racism, sexual warfare, deforestation, global warming, corruption and ecological devastation, autism, health issues, GMO crops — these are issues that all stem from the same root. They feel, as I do, that for too long environmentalism has hinged on conformity to capitalism and acceptance of the status quo. Fighting this is the struggle of everyone. Will you sit on the sidelines as the world burns or arm yourself with information and help us do something to change the way things are before it’s too late?
No matter what good idea someone has to help stop climate change, someone will ruin it with good old super capitalism. Like, carbon capture and storage. It’s now become “sell captured carbon to help with oil production” instead. No kidding. Fighting climate change by pulling CO2 out of the atmosphere makes sense, an expert committee says. Blocking the sun, not so much. Other news covered in this episode:
A 23-year experiment finds surprising global warming impacts already underway (Guardian UK):
EPA says Keystone XL is a terrible idea and will lead to more global warming
Will 2015 be the year of serious Climate Action? We better hope it is. 2014 was the hottest year in recorded history, even despite small pockets of below-average temperatures in parts of U.S. It’s good to remember that the rising temps are global because some Americans can overlook the fact that our continent’s landmass does not dominate the planet and is only a small percentage of the world’s area. PBS talked with scientist Gavin Schmidt of NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies about the indisputable human impact on global warming.
In the latest State of the Union, President Obama talked about his environmental record. The Obama administration has announced a plan to significantly cut methane emissions produced by gas and gas wells by the year 2025 through executive action. …This is being described by environmentalists as “not nearly enough”. Obama administration announces goal to rein in methane leaks
Half of the United States Senate has refused to formally acknowledge the existence of man-made climate change. Forty-nine Republicans voted against a measure noting “human activity significantly contributes to climate change.” . . . In North Dakota, nearly three million gallons of saltwater created as a byproduct of oil drilling have leaked from a pipeline.(Democracy Now)
Alexis Bonogofsky, an environmental activist and farmer, said she has learned not to believe safety claims about pipelines. She was hospitalized for hydrocarbon exposure after the 2011 rupture of ExxonMobil’s Silvertip pipeline, and she then watched her land along the Yellowstone River south of Billings lose hay, fill with weeds and feed fewer goats. Read the whole story here.
The most recent pipeline leak is into the Yellowstone River in the northern US. It’s a disaster.
This is the second major recent pipeline spill for Montanta. Libertarians, where are you on this?? The pipeline owners want to steal our health too, not just our land. The article I read from is here.

I truly believe there is no issue facing us today that is more important than climate change. It affects or will affect everything else – war, justice, poverty, economics, capitalism, jobs, technology, pollution, health, air quality and more.
So I think this is important too:
“Do you believe in man-made climate change?”
It’s a simple question. And it’s time for the elected officials entrusted with our nation’s future to answer.
As the US Senate prepares to vote on the Keystone XL pipeline bill, a proposed amendment by Senator Bernie Sanders would affirm that climate change is real and driven by human activity. The amendment ensures that before senators vote on a “climate catastrophe” pipeline, they have to go on record with the American people about whether they side with scientists and facts, or with Big Oil and fossil fuel lobbyists.
Contact your senators directly by finding their phone and email info here and making your voice heard.
I hope you love glyphosates, because you are full of them. In fact, American kids might be getting autism because of all the Roundup in our environment. In this episode of Impact Files, we look at news from the front lines of survival . As we say goodbye to 2014, and look to the future, it’s important to reflect on things that we know from revelations found out in 2014. The EPA is not doing nearly enough about pollution, super fund sites, pipeline safety, or coal, and now they just got themselves cut again.
“The $60 million cut in EPA’s budget, which builds on previous reductions, will bring the agency’s staffing to its lowest level since 1989. These funding cuts are not surprising, given that anti-regulatory forces in Congress have made clear their intent to use the budget process to block EPA’s work.
Unfortunately, EPA hasn’t received the support it needs, even from the Obama administration. The president’s FY 2015 request for EPA was almost $310 million below the agency’s FY 2014 budget, a cut of nearly four percent.”
This is terrible. And American companies like Monsanto don’t care if Americans are sickened and poisoned by their products. Tax evading corporations like Shell, Exxon and others don’t care if they destroy the earth and even all of humanity by pushing ahead with everything and anything that will lead to destruction climate chaos. Our politicians make and continue to plan to make more and more empty, non-binding promises having to do with cutting emissions, all the while pursuing policies that encourage the future burning of more fossil fuels, sealing our fates. And humanity won’t be evacuating Earth any time soon, since NASA is just now testing rockets to Mars. We are stuck here, on this increasingly warming and polluted life boat in space.
The link between the environment and our health continues to be researched, and the findings are sobering. Half of all children in the US might be autistic by 2025, thanks to Monsanto, according to a prominent scientist. There is a link between autism and toxins, but it’s not mercury, it’s Roundup. Do you use Roundup on your yard or anywhere near living beings? If you do, stop immediately.*

And for the new year, let this be our resolution: Stop arguing with dumb people. Stop ‘debating’ climate change deniers. They are not worth our time. We should ignore them in 2015 and move on. Don’t waste time and energy any longer on discussing things with people who have closed minds. But by all means, continue to try and educate people who are open to facts and learning! A lot of people still genuinely do not know about the severity of climate change. Those are the people we need to focus on. Deniers, you are dead to us.
Wishing everyone a happy and healthy 2015.
QUOTE OF THE YEAR
“The chemical industry is a scourge on the earth. Humanity will look back on this time period (if it survives) and wonder how humans would be willing to eradicate their own species (and many others) in pursuit of an artificial entity, money” — Jody Holder’
Add “fossil fuel industry” after “chemical industry”.
Want some information about the UN international climate talks in Lima, Peru, aka COP 20? You won’t find much about it from the American mainstream media, (especially the TVheads) because those guys are all funded by fossil fuels, and fossil fuel companies are trying so so hard to squeeze the last oil-soaked profits out of their dirty products before they are banned for good due to climate change. The day is coming. Luckily, Democracy Now and Impact Files are covering the UN climate talks. They are probably the least-hyped and most important climate talks so far in the process.
These climate talks are in preparation for next year’s binding agreement — that everyone hopes will happen –to take place in Paris. Other news and issues discussed relating to climate change include the following. What will it take to get a climate accord in Paris? Read about it here.

Part of the ALEC conspiracy: “The lobbyists and legislators considered several model bills to be introduced across the country next year, designed to give states more power to block or delay new Obama administration environmental standards, including new limits on power-plant emissions,” the paper reports. (Tom Hamburger, Washington Post)
More conspiracy: An investigation by The New York Times shows that major energy firms are working behind the scenes to encourage state attorneys general to press for limited federal environmental regulation.
